leave the bag in green tea

Do you leave the tea bag in green tea

Leave the Tea Bag in green tea or Take it Out?

When it comes to brewing green tea correctly there are two schools of thought. There are those that are strict in their belief that the tea bag should be taken out of the cup at precisely the right time otherwise the tea is sub-standard. On the other hand, there are those that that the practice of taking the tea bag out is not going to affect the quality of the tea. The answer to this question is dependent on many factors.

Etiquette – Should I Leave The Tea Bag In Green Tea

For the traditional tea drinker the rules are strict. The hot water must be poured over the tea and the tea steep for three to five minutes. No more and no less otherwise the tea is more suitable for animal consumption rather than for the enjoyment of humans. Those that stick to this stringent way of tea drinking cannot and will not be deterred. It is the traditional way of drinking tea. It is the way their parents, grandparents, and great grandparents drank tea so, to them, it is the only way.

Science Of The Green Tea Brew

Scientifically, different teas have different chemical make ups and properties. Black teas are the stronger teas so leaving the bag in will only intensify the flavour. Green tea is traditionally brewed to be lighter in both flavour and colour. Green tea is also more delicate and should only be steeped for around three minutes. The differences in teas come down to the tannins in them. Tannins are the flavour notes of the teas. Just like in wines, teas contain tannins as well. Black teas contain more tannins, thus more flavour. To extract all the tannins from green tea it would have to be left in the water for a longer period of time.

The Flavour Impact

green teaGreen teas are good for detoxification. If using green teas to detox your body it is important to test your body’s reactions to both leaving the bag in and taking it out. As stated before the longer the bag is left in the tea the more intense the flavour and also the bitterness that is sometimes associated with green tea. Taking the tea bag out at the traditional three minute mark will produce a fragrant, but not too bitter tea. The lighter taste of the tea will keep you from adding sugars and flavourings to the tea to make it taste better. The bitterness with intensify if the bag is left in and the temptation to add flavourings will be high and these flavourings, although enjoyable, are not always good for detoxing your body.

What do the Experts Say?

As stated earlier, the chemical make up of green tea is very delicate. According to the experts the tea bag should be removed promptly at three minutes. Unlike black tea, brewing green tea for too long can actually burn the tea leaves. The burned tea leaves give off a bad almost putrid flavour. Over steeping green tea is a common mistake.

Health Benefits of Green Tea

Green tea has long been used by many cultures to fight multiple diseases and improve people’s overall health. Along with how to brew green tea properly, we would like to look at the health benefits of green tea.

Weight Loss With Green Tea

Everyone these days is trying to lead a healthier lifestyle. We as a people have become overweight and looking for ways to help lose a few extra pounds. Green tea can boost your metabolism, giving you more energy. Having more energy will make you want to get out and do something instead of wasting hours on the couch watching television.

Green Tea Lowers Bad Cholesterol

High cholesterol is bad business. There are two types of cholesterol. Green tea works to lower bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol levels.

Green Tea and Diabetes

Green tea will not cure diabetes, but it can help regulate glucose levels naturally. Drinking green tea on regular bases will help to level out sugar levels and cut out those unwanted sugar spikes.

Reduce Wrinkles

There are countless numbers of wrinkle reducing products on the market that claim to take years off of your appearance. The truth is that there is no topical cream that will effectively reduce wrinkles. These creams merely fill in the gaps for a while and act more like spackle than anything else. The saying that true beauty comes from within is correct. Drinking green tea will help to rehydrate skin. Hydrated skin is the key to younger looking skin.

Green tea is truly an awesome drink. It has been used for thousands of years by a variety of cultures and is not going away any time soon. The final answer to the question of should the tea bag be left in or taken out. All evidence points to the fact that the tea bag should be taken out. Green tea is far too delicate and should be handled with care, so next time you are going to enjoy a cup of green tea remember to only brew for three minutes and promptly remove the bag to enjoy all the aromas, flavors, and health benefits of green tea.

Looking For A Really Tasty Detoxing Green Tea?

Veggie Brinner

Veggie Brinner (Breakfast For Dinner)

Made not really famous by Turk from scrubs the brinner is a classic in most student households. A good old fashioned fry up but in the evening.

So we thought how can we make this meal detox friendly. As we know meat contains certain toxins you will be trying to flush out on your 14 day teatox we looked at creating a vegetarian option.

Veggie Brinner Recipe

This is pretty quick and easy to make and is surprisingly tasty (even the meat free bacon!)

Veggie Brinner IngredientsFor out veggie brinner we used:

  • 2 eggs
  • Reduced sugar and salt baked beans (small can size, half the normal can size)
  • 2 Quorn vegetarian sausages
  • 2 Quorn meat free bacon rashers
  • 1 tomato
  • Handful of mushrooms

Get cooking

You can griddle or grill the sausages according to the packaging instructions which suggests 12 minutes. Start cooking those off first then depending on how well cooked you like your mushrooms then quarter slice and add them into a frying pan.

Veggie Brinner CookingWe used a couple of squirts of the 1 calorie spray fry light.

Pot your beans in a pan and get them cooking.

Slice your tomato in 2 and add to the frying pan. Cook to your taste, if you like it well done then pop it in early.

All you have left to do is add your bacon (Quorn suggest cooking for at least 2 minutes).

Veggie BrinnerThen poach your eggs!

Combine it all on your plate and viola, veggie brinner is served!

Veggie Brinner – Summary

Although not yet officially part of our flexible eating plan this meal is low calorie, veggie friendly and packed with protein.

We will get the nutritionists to take a look at the dish and get back to you with their verdict!

Gluten Free Blueberry Muffin Recipe

Makes 6 muffins
~ 1/2 cup almond or soy milk*
1/4 cup sliced almonds, toasted
1 cup brown rice flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/3 cup applesauce
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 1/2 TB flax seeds, coarsely ground
1 TB lemon juice & 1-2 tsp zest
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup fresh blueberries
7-8 large dried dates

1.Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Then make sure you have your muffin pan with liners. Pulse the dates in a blender until they are finely chopped. Next you need to add the apple sauce to your blender, keep blending until it becomes a smooth paste.

2.Now you need to combine all of the wet ingredients: your mixture from step 1, the almond/soy milk, lemon juice + zest, and also the vanilla extract. Then add your ground seed to the wet ingredients. Mix it up really well then set aside for now.

3.Now you need to whisk the brown rice flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Add all of the wet ingredients from step two to the dry ingredients. Then mix until the all the ingredients are just combined. Add the blueberries and almond slices. Stir gently. Using a ice cream or batter scoop, divide the batter into 6 muffins cups/liners. If you’d like, you can sprinkle some raw almond slices on top.

4.Bake in the centre of your oven for 22-25 minutes, until the best way to test your muffins is if you find a cocktail stick. Insert the cocktail stick, if it comes out clean you’re all good. Make sure that you turn the muffin pan midway to ensure that you evenly bake. Remove from the oven and allow the muffins to cool in the muffin tin for about 10-15 minutes. Transfer to a cooling tray and allow the muffins to cool completely.

The muffins are much better when they are allowed to cool completely. Once cooled, you can definitely taste that sweetness from the dates. It’s well worth waiting for!

You’ll actually find that they taste better the day after!

The difference with regular coffee beans and green coffee beans is a simple one. The green coffee bean has yet to be roasted.

Effect of roasting a coffee bean is that it reduces the amount of the chemical chlorogenic acid.

Chloregenic acid is said to health numerous health benefits like losing weight, reducing the risk of heart disease and diabetes amongst others.

Does Green Coffee Taste Different?

The general consensus is that fresh green coffee beans taste better than instant coffee but a connoisseur would say they can taste the difference.

So if you drink instant coffee at work or at home you might be pleasantly surprised with how much you like drinking green coffee. Plus the green coffee comes with all the added health benefits.

How Many types Of Coffee Are There

green coffeeIn terms of coffee drinks you will find at your local café they are probably using one bean it is just the amount of milk, or milky foam that makes your coffee different.

For example an americano is your coffee shot with hot water and cold milk is added depending on your taste.

Think of a latte as replacing the water in your americano with hot milk instead with a little bit of milky foam on top. The coffee shot is normally added last.

A cappuccino is the opposite of a latte, it has more milky foam with a little bit of hot milk and the shot is normally added first. The cappuccino will taste stronger than a latte because there is less milk to dilute it.

The amount of coffee in each of the drinks is the same it is just the amount of milk or water that will effect the taste.

Can I Make A Green Coffee Latte?

Technically a green coffee latte is possible, we would recommend using skinny milk if you are drinking the green coffee as part of a diet though.

You could also make a green coffee cappuccino too, just steam the milk to make it a foam as you normally would.

What If I Don’t Like Coffee?

If you don’t like green coffee you could try green tea.

There are a number of different flavours on the market if you don’t like the thought of a standard green tea.

To enjoy the benefits of green tea you could try a teatox, the green tea from our teatox is infused with strawberries and papaya for a deliciously fruity and fresh taste.

How Much Water Should I Drink On A Teatox

Drinking Water on a Teatox

A healthy body is made up of about two thirds of water, it’s vital that we keep our bodies well hydrated but too much of anything is a bad thing. Sounds like a bit of a minefield! But you’ve made it this far in life without dehydrating so you’ll have some idea of how much water you should be drinking. It depends on you as an individual but we can help give you a few pointers, some facts and some things to look out for.

What Happens If I don’t Drink Enough Water

If you do not drink enough water whether you are on a teatox or not you will get dehydrated. The effects of dehydration are:

  • dark urine and not passing much urine when you go to the toilet
  • headaches
  • lack of energy
  • feeling lightheaded

Please check the NHS website for more detailed information on dehydration.

If you feel any of the effects listed above whilst on your teatox then make sure you replace your fluids by drinking more water.

How Much Water Should I Drink?

How much water should I drink?

We do eat some foods that provide our body with fluids, fruits for example like Oranges, Apples and Grapes contain a lot of fluid. However the vast majority of the fluids we intake come from our drinks. So if we are agreed that water is the best way to replace the fluids that we need how much should we be drinking?

The European Food Safety Authority recommends that women should drink about 1.6 litres of fluid and men should drink about 2.0 litres of fluid per day. That’s about eight glasses of 200ml each for a woman, and 10 glasses of 200ml each for a man.

Having said that we should be drinking more water if we are exercising more or if the weather conditions are warm.

Can I Hydrate On Other Drinks Than Water?

Water is great for hydrating your body, but if you do not like the bland taste you could try adding a slice of lemon or lime. You could also dilute your water with sugar free squash or pop the kettle on and have a cup of tea.

Will Green Tea Dehydrate Me?

Green TeaSome green teas contain caffeine, the green tea in our 14 day Teatox contains Approx 20mg per cup.

Caffeine is said to be a minor cause of dehydration, however the health benefits of green tea far out weigh any issues with caffeine.

The ‘normal’ black tea you find in the supermarket has up to 70mg of caffeine and a instant brewed coffee has approximately 95-200 mg in a cup.

If you would like to know more about the hydration levels of Green Tea we recommend the Is Green Tea a Good Substitute for Water? article on the Livestrong website.
